Dear Friends in Christ -

Some of you were surprised by the somber and slow start to our celebration of the Resurrection. I even poked fun at the anti-climactic response to the Easter Proclamation.

Last night, I watched A.D. The Bible Continues on NBC. Although poetic license has been used to tell the story, the show and the Bible tell us that the first Easter celebrations got off to a slow start. People still exhausted by the unjust trial, the terror of the inhumane treatment of Jesus, and the difficult grief of losing the Messiah made it difficult to fully understand the meaning and the power of an empty tomb.

And yet, even if Resurrection Morning wasn't as powerful, tremendous, and filled with exuberant joy, we now enter into the Season of Easter - fifty days of celebration and coming to terms with the power and majesty of Christ's victory over death and the devil. And each week, he gives us the hard evidence of his presence among us - in a community gathered, the preaching of the Word, and the giving away of the sacraments!

Thanks be to God -
