Dear Friends in Christ -

Our Schoolhouse Lectionary reading was about Paul and Silas stuck in a Philippian jail for sharing the gospel there (you can read about it in Acts 16:16-34. I've been wondering all week why Paul and all the prisoners stayed in that prison after the earthquake had freed them. Maybe their intentions were noble and they didn't want the jailer killed for failing his duty. Maybe they were still too stunned from the quake to move. Maybe they were just about to leave when the jailer showed up. Maybe Paul was too prideful to escape and be seen as a common criminal. He wasn't going to leave without an apology. Or my personal favorite; maybe they couldn't find their phone, glasses, keys! We aren't really told why they stayed, but we are told what happened as a result of their being there. God used the opportunity for good; creating faith in the jailer and his household.

God will do the same with you. No matter the reasons for the situation you find yourself in, God can use you. Look around. Maybe there's someone who simply needs to know you're there. Maybe by being there a relationship will develop. Maybe through that relationship they will be brought to faith.

In Christ,
