Dear Friends in Christ-

Above are the marble figurines which I spoke of in my sermon yesterday. As you can see, the beloved disciple is determined to honor his dying Lord's request; the Mother of Jesus is bent over in agony weighed down. Both of them teach us the value of Christian community. We all serve one another in both the joys and sorrows of this life, carrying out the Lord's request to be a community of mutual responsibility and care.

At the same time, we cannot look to Jesus simply as a son to love, a teacher to listen to, or an example to embody. We must trust that the Lord himself dies that we might live. He undergoes the depths of sin and hell that we might be forgiven and experience the fullness of God's mercy. We hold both these realities in tension, especially in the season of Lent, but every day of our lives.

Trusting and serving with you in the name of Jesus Christ -
